Prep Your Home for the Next Big Shaker

I found a great website from the Inlan Valley Chapter of the Red Cross. I loved their home safety tips for the next big quake, of course with my lovely comments added on:
-Choose a safe place in every room, under a sturdy table or desk or against an inside wall where nothing can fall on you – this is a good tip. I often visual being in a huge quake and wonder how I’ll grab the kids and hide.
-Practice Drop, Cover, and Holdon at least twice a year. Drop under a strudy desk or table, and protect your eyes by pressing your face against your arm. If there’s no table or desk nearby, get on the floor against an interiro wall, away from windows, tall furniture and things that could fall on you. TEACH YOUR KIDS TO DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON – This is true. ecnelty, we forgot to turn off the house alarm and me and the girls went downstairs and got blasted by the alarms. Lexi immediately ran under the pool table, crounched down and hid her head in her hands. And no, I didn’t teach her to do that, wish I could say I did though…
-Have an out of town emergency contact – I first heard of this from Ian’s school. They made is mandatory that each student had an out of state emergency contact, since the local phone line will most likely be TOTALLY jammed, for who knows how long.
-Consult a professional to find out additional ways you can protect your home, such as bolting the house to its foundation – Marco and Lawson did this to their home and it was well worth the money, especially since they live on a faultline.
-Take a first aid class from your local Red Cross. Keep your training current - While your at it, take the CPR too.
-Get training on how to use a fire extinguisher from your local fire department – To my single friends, there’s your excuse to meet a bunch of fire fighters.
-Inform your babysitters and caregivers of your plan – and also know your school’s quake plan and evacuation plan, like the back of your hand.Â
